Arctic Explorer: Canada to Greenland
Arctic Explorer: Canada to Greenland

The High Arctic Explorer is truly a voyage of adventure and discovery. We will sail out and have some fun investigating the area that challenged the famous explorers of the past. This beautiful but extreme environment is still remote and wild, and to get the best out of it, we will relax and “go with the floe.” Travel in this region relies on understanding sea ice, and as many explorers before us have found, is truly a “moveable feast.” We will be visiting an area that overflows with history and is also renowned for its rare and spectacular wildlife, including polar bears, narwhals, and walruses. This is wilderness at its most extreme and beautiful, with towering cliffs and glaciers, flowing tundra, and ice in all its forms. We will explore both the eastern Canadian High Arctic and the northwest coast of Greenland, traveling to places that very few people have ever seen, exploring new areas, and discovering new lands. We will also visit some of the world’s most remote communities, where we will be shyly welcomed by local Inuit and introduced to both the modern and ancient aspects of their culture. This basic itinerary represents an idealized plan and will change in order to take advantage of the best opportunities that the ice and weather present.

Emperor Penguins: Snow Hill Island Safari
Emperor Penguins: Snow Hill Island Safari

Have you always wanted to observe animals in the wild, but can’t take the heat of an African safari? This penguin “safari” gives photographers and nature lovers ample time to observe and appreciate the Antarctic Emperors early in their breeding season. Antarctica is the least-known continent, and only the icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov ensures your access to its most remote regions. This powerful ship discovered 4,000 pairs of Emperor Penguins on Snow Hill Island in 2004, and is still the only ship visiting this rookery today. Onboard helicopters take you closer to historic sites, distinctive wildlife, and frozen landscapes unchanged by the march of time. The sheer scale of the surrounding landscape inspires awe, while the ice crushing power of Kapitan Khlebnikov leaves you breathless with excitement. In 2008, author and photographer John Weller will be our special guest on all three Emperor Penguin safaris. He will act as your photographer-in-residence during the first departure, delivering interactive photography workshops to prepare adventurers for the extraordinary photo opportunities we anticipate at the rookery. During the second and third expedition, John will be leading a team with the intent of filming the Emperors in their underwater habitat. A submersible will be carried aboard the icebreaker to the Weddell Sea, where it will be deployed for up to 14 hours each evening while the ship is parked near the rookery. John and his team plan to share some of their underwater footage with guests during the homeward journeys.

Bhutan Black Mountain Trek
Bhutan Black Mountain Trek

Fully experience the Buddhist character, spectacular scenery and ancient trails of Bhutan. Join a small group of trekkers on a trek to a village near the remote Black Mountain. This area is newly opened to foreign trekkers, and the trails are sometimes steep, but this is one of the easier treks in Bhutan. You will not have issues of high altitude, cold temperatures or un-bridged stream crossings. You will, however, travel and camp in a remote part of the country. If you are unsure of your physical fitness for the trip, it is possible to reserve a mule for riding the uphill sections of the trail. Campfires will illuminate evenings likely to include villagers singing and dancing to honor your visit. We have scheduled this trip during the time of year with clearest skies for mountain viewing. The trek includes rich natural habitat where you will encounter rufous-necked and great hornbills, golden langurs and numerous other species of birds and animals in Bhutan’s virgin subtropical forests. This region is especially rich in myths and legends about the bygone times when gods and saints lived in Bhutan and left their marks on the landscape, ancient structures and especially in Bhutanese culture and tradition. You’ll spend several days hiking through Monpas communities. These hospitable and welcoming people, though extremely isolated, are among the oldest of all Himalayan cultures and only a few thousand of these people remain on earth. This may be the best chance of your life to transcend the reality of your usual existence on a journey to other realms and other times while still here on earth. Our inaugural trek on this route in November 2006 was a complete success, and we are pleased to provide references of participants on that trip.

West Africa: Ghana, Togo, Benin
West Africa: Ghana, Togo, Benin

Ghana is a bright light and vibrant song in West Africa. Prosperous and pro-American, Ghana gives you a sense of energetic people pleased to have you as a guest. Ghana was formerly known as the Gold Coast, and gold is still an important export. Named after an ancient kingdom dating to the 4th Century, the present day country does not correspond to the geographical boundaries of Ancient Ghana, but there are still plenty of local kings, with significant ceremonial power and traditional wealth. Ghana as a nation is democratic and often viewed as a political and economic model for Africa. Togo and Benin, lying to the east of Ghana, are smaller but still attractive to visitors. Commercial and subsistence agriculture are the main sources of employment and the rural countryside offers photographic and contemplative opportunities. Traditional crafts, music, drama and spiritual practice provide a focus to any trip.
