The Monarchs of Michoacan
The Monarchs of Michoacan

Join a small group for this special journey to Mexico's state of Michoacan, (MEECH-wa-cahn), where you will witness the Palm Sunday arts and crafts festival in Uruapan before visiting the wintering home of the monarch butterflies in the oyamel forests of the region. The trip begins in colonial Morelia, and continues to Uruapan where the Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos) festivities include one of the most important and revered arts and crafts fairs in Mexico. Visit the villages of the Meseta Purepecha, and the artisan communities on the shores of Lake Patzcuaro. Finally, you’ll visit the winter home of millions of monarch butterflies that migrate to exactly the same region, year after year. It was not discovered until the 1970’s that the annual southern migration path of the monarchs, east of the Rockies, was to the oyamel fir forests of Michoacan where the butterflies cluster in trees to stay warm and protected from the cold air. In 2006, Journeys first Michoacan group was accompanied by Joan Weber and led by Mexico expert Stephanie Schneiderman (also known as Tia Stephanie). Our travelers were charmed by the beauty and lack of pretension in Michoacan, by the sincerity and welcome offered by the guides and hosts, and by Stephanie’s enthusiasm and insight.

2730 Day of the Dead Celebration
2730 Day of the Dead Celebration

Join a very small group for an unusual visit to Mexico's state of Michoacan (MEECH-wa-cahn). Begin in colonial Morelia, continue to the villages of the Meseta Purepecha, and enjoy a finale on the shores of Lake Patzcuaro, where Day of the Dead traditions are believed to be more dazzling, more beautiful, more colorful, and more elaborate than anywhere else in Mexico. Michoacan is similar in many ways to Oaxaca; they both offer breathtaking vistas, large indigenous populations, and strong arts and crafts traditions. Michoacan, however, has had fewer tourists and you'll find an innocence, simplicity and lack of pretension here. Lené Minder, JOURNEYS Central America specialist, and Stephanie Schneiderman (also known as Tia Stephanie) will lead the group, and we've invited a number of the personalities who impressed us last year to be a part of the team.

Christmas in Oaxaca for Families
Christmas in Oaxaca for Families

This Christmas holiday trip in Oaxaca offers more color and more hands-on fun than anywhere else in the Americas. The trip begins in charming Oaxaca City in the heart of the high valley, continues with a breathtaking flight across the Sierra Madre del Sur to the coast, and concludes in Huatulco, known for its dramatically beautiful shoreline and secluded bays. The over-the-top pageantry of December 23 features parades of giant papier-mache heads, and competitions between artists who create sculptures from 7-pound radishes. This day alone would make the trip worthwhile, but you'll enjoy one delight after another from the moment of arrival. Sample Oaxaca's exotic fruit popsicles in flavors ranging from lime to tamarind to jamaica (ha-MY-ca). Learn from weavers and woodcarvers and try your own hand at painting those whimsical wooden animals that Mexicans call alebrijas (ah-lay-BREE-has). Learn from a Mexican grandma how to cook tortillas, tamales and Mexican hot chocolate. Explore Monte Alban, the first urban center of ancient Mesoamerica. Visit a coffee farm. Swim, snorkel and star gaze.
