"Considering a move to Charleston"

My wife and I both thought that Charleston seems like a nice, clean smaller city. The location is beautiful, but we have several concerns. My wife could not get around very well in snow it accumulates to more than a few inches, and while people have said that the snowfall is not bad I read that the average winter brings over 30 inches. The other concern we have is the chemical industry. Are the air and water polluted as a result of the chemical industry?
