Andries Stockenstrom Guest House
Andries Stockenstrom Guest House

Established in 1786, Graaff-Reinet was named after Governor van der Graaff and his wife Reinet, and was the fourth district in the Cape colony to be granted a Drostdy (seat of local government), thus making it the fourth oldest town in South Africa. Being the outpost of white civilization in a barren and untamed country, it became the most important trading centre with the interior by the middle of the last century. Picturesquely situated among the foothills of the Sneeuberg mountain range, Graaff-Reinet has retained much of the character of a typical 19th century rural town. What does it offer the tourist? Game viewing in the nature reserve (8km from town) with more than 100 Cape Buffalos, Kudu, Black Wildebeest, Gemsbok, Springbok and many more. A tranquil holiday during which to explore the town and its outstanding museums, and to enjoy the peacefulness of the Karoo Nature Reserve. A very convenient stop-over for motorists traveling from the Eastern to the Western Cape or from the northern parts of the country to the Southern or Western Cape. A very healthy climate. Hiking trails in the Karoo Nature Reserve and in the Sneeuberg mountains. Bedrooms are cosy and with comforts and extras to pamper. The floors in the old house are all original yellow wood. Relax on the pool terrace or in the lounge. Stroll streets filled with architectural treasures, of which more than 200 are National Monuments. Visit the awesome Valley of Desolation and nature reserve with plenty of game The guest house and dining room, located in a manor house built Circa 1819, has six en-suite double rooms all elegantly furnished. All rooms have 100% percale linen and mohair blankets from the region. Food is the very being, the soul of this guest house and Beatrice's enthusiasm for good, honest food is legendary. Turning local and regional products into a fine art is what sets her cuisine apart and has cognoscenti proclaiming it among South Africa's finest.

Mt Kilimanjaro-7 days climb on remote and stunning Lemosho route

Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain, the largest free standing mountain in the world, one of the worlds most accessible high altitude mountains, and for hikers, a climatic hiking experience from the tropics to arctic conditions. Climbers need a good level of fitness to enjoy the experience. The Lemosho route Kilimanjaro climbing adventure starts with a 4X4 rough road drive to the western slopes of Kilimanjaro to reach the trail head at Londrossi gate. Lemosho route is remote and spectacular, with dramatic gorges and views of west Kilimanjaro. It joins the south circuit route (Machame) for the summit ascent after an exposed hike on Shire Plateau. Seven days slow climbing on Lemosho is good for acclimatizing the body in preparation for a successful summit ascent. Descent is via Mweka route. Climbers sleep in spacious tents. Kilimanjaro airport transfers and two hotel nights (HB)are included in the package. Private climbs for a minimum of 2 people. Experienced mountain teams provide excellent service and ensure your safety

Kilimanjaro: Marangu Route
Kilimanjaro: Marangu Route

The Marangu Route is also known as the "Coca Cola" or "tourist" route. It is the easiest and shortest route to the summit. This is also the only route with the comforts of sleeping huts at every camp site with solar lights and comfortable beds. The huts are communal, and the bunks have a sponge mattress and pillow. There are 60 beds at both Mandara and Kibo Huts and 120 beds at Horombo Hut. Bathrooms and running water are available at the two lower huts. Mens' and ladies' latrines are available at the last camp but are very basic. All climbing groups, often from several countries around the world, share meals in dining huts providing a jovial and energetic atmosphere. Soft drinks, bottled water, and beer may be for sale at the huts. Bring small Tanzanian bills to purchase these items (prices increase with elevation). This route is usually done in 5 days but can be done in 6 days for better acclimatization. The extra day can be spent resting at Horombo or climbing the small peak of Mawenzi.

Kilimanjaro: Machame Route
Kilimanjaro: Machame Route

If Marangu is the "Coca Cola" route, then the Machame Route is the "Whiskey" route. It is the second most popular and one of the most scenic routes on the mountain. All climbers sleep in tents (tents are included) and meals are served in a dinner tent or on a blanket outside. It is done over 6 days, so acclimatization is easier, and the success rate is fairly high. It is for physically fit people with some hiking experience. Descent is down the Mweka trail staying at the Mweka or Millennium camp the final night on the mountain.
