Bhutan Black Mountain Trek
Bhutan Black Mountain Trek

Fully experience the Buddhist character, spectacular scenery and ancient trails of Bhutan. Join a small group of trekkers on a trek to a village near the remote Black Mountain. This area is newly opened to foreign trekkers, and the trails are sometimes steep, but this is one of the easier treks in Bhutan. You will not have issues of high altitude, cold temperatures or un-bridged stream crossings. You will, however, travel and camp in a remote part of the country. If you are unsure of your physical fitness for the trip, it is possible to reserve a mule for riding the uphill sections of the trail. Campfires will illuminate evenings likely to include villagers singing and dancing to honor your visit. We have scheduled this trip during the time of year with clearest skies for mountain viewing. The trek includes rich natural habitat where you will encounter rufous-necked and great hornbills, golden langurs and numerous other species of birds and animals in Bhutan’s virgin subtropical forests. This region is especially rich in myths and legends about the bygone times when gods and saints lived in Bhutan and left their marks on the landscape, ancient structures and especially in Bhutanese culture and tradition. You’ll spend several days hiking through Monpas communities. These hospitable and welcoming people, though extremely isolated, are among the oldest of all Himalayan cultures and only a few thousand of these people remain on earth. This may be the best chance of your life to transcend the reality of your usual existence on a journey to other realms and other times while still here on earth. Our inaugural trek on this route in November 2006 was a complete success, and we are pleased to provide references of participants on that trip.

Wild Himalaya
Wild Himalaya

This is the ultimate Himalayan wildlife trip for photographers and naturalists. Our goal is a quiet exploration of some of the premier natural areas of Nepal, Bhutan and northeast India. Much of your journey will be by elephant, as these majestic creatures are uniquely suited for pursuit of large animals in the tall grass and dense forests of South Asia. In Nepal, your main destination will be Chitwan National Park, where we expect you to encounter rhinos, possibly tigers, and numerous other large animal species, in addition to many birds, reptiles and other species of this rich riverine and subtropical forest ecosystem. By the time of your visit, thousands of waterfowl will also have arrived from northern Asia. In Bhutan, you will not miss the famous scenic sites, but your unique destination will be the rich forests of Manas in south central Bhutan, where golden langurs, rufous necked hornbills and tigers still roam. This is an area of Bhutan which was only opened to foreigners in the past year, so your group will have the incredible opportunity to be among the first nature expeditions on some of the trails. While in Bumthang, you will witness a very colorful temple festival, and your visit also coincides with the King’s birthday, which will be a day of spectacular pageants throughout the country. Continuing out of Bhutan by road, you will enter Assam in northeast India for a visit to Kaziranga National Park, where you may find wild elephants, Asiatic buffalo, rhinos and tigers. You will finish your stay in India with a stop in Calcutta, where we intend to surprise you with an extraordinary encounter with the India of myth and legend.

Festivals of Burma
Festivals of Burma

The most privileged visitors to Burma are those who are fortunate enough to share in the excitement and celebration of a festival. We invite you on a journey that takes in one of Burma’s most colorful events: the Phaungdaw O Pagoda Festival at Inle Lake. And, as if that weren’t enough, you will also have the unusual opportunity to attend the Dummy Elephant festival, explore the temples of Bagan, visit the golden Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, and hike to ethnic villages. We suspect some of our past journeyers to Burma will use this trip as an excuse for a return visit. First-time visitors are also especially welcome. All will be amazed by the rich culture and beauty of this country.
