Cherry Blossoms of Japan
Cherry Blossoms of Japan

Travel with Journeys behind Japan's shiny exterior to the precious calm and simple beauty at her center. Join this special trip during cherry blossom season. In early April throughout Japan -- in her parks and gardens, in her temples and train stations -- the Japanese pay grateful homage to the delicate blooms. They display silk boughs on their rooftops and in their shops, they hang garlands of pale blossoms in their doorways, they gift wrap their fruits and sweets with floral paper and ribbons of cherry blossom pink. No one can predict the exact date when the trees will erupt, or when the petals will fall like gentle rain, or when the lanes and fields will be blanketed in blossoms. If you visit at this time of year there is a high likelihood you will witness Nature's spectacle. There is a guarantee that you will witness the Japanese reverence for nature and her annual cycles. The itinerary includes the rock gardens of Kyoto, the castles of Himeji and Matsuyama, the temples at Mt. Koya, and the Peace Park at Hiroshima. We have designed Cherry Blossoms of Japan with the loving care and attention to detail that befits Japan. Join a small group and a gifted guide for a deep, informed, and exquisite experience.

Autumn in Todoku
Autumn in Todoku

Join Joan Weber and a small group of women travelers for an immersion in traditional Japan at the peak of autumn color. Travel by rail and small vehicle along the Japan Sea; through paddy fields, cedar forests and traditional villages; to ancient mountaintop monasteries, hot springs resorts and centers of drumming, drama and dance. The 12-day itinerary includes Matsushima Bay, Hiraizumi, Naruko Onsen, Mount Haguro, Sado Island and Tokyo. As an option, add a lovely extension to Nikko National Park and Kyoto. Consider Joan's invitation in her words: "What I love most about Japan is the attention to beauty, the care taken in presentation of a meal or a gift or a garden, the value placed on a simple aesthetic, the unabashed expressions of respect for people and for place. In a nation which defines technological sophistication, a nation of busy people moving fast, a nation with more than its share of glass and chrome and skyscrapers, it is also possible to find an exquisite calm. This will be my fourth visit to Japan, and my first visit to Tohoku. The anticipation of the experience and of the company of my fellow travelers fills me with quiet pleasure. "--JW.

2730 Day of the Dead Celebration
2730 Day of the Dead Celebration

Join a very small group for an unusual visit to Mexico's state of Michoacan (MEECH-wa-cahn). Begin in colonial Morelia, continue to the villages of the Meseta Purepecha, and enjoy a finale on the shores of Lake Patzcuaro, where Day of the Dead traditions are believed to be more dazzling, more beautiful, more colorful, and more elaborate than anywhere else in Mexico. Michoacan is similar in many ways to Oaxaca; they both offer breathtaking vistas, large indigenous populations, and strong arts and crafts traditions. Michoacan, however, has had fewer tourists and you'll find an innocence, simplicity and lack of pretension here. Lené Minder, JOURNEYS Central America specialist, and Stephanie Schneiderman (also known as Tia Stephanie) will lead the group, and we've invited a number of the personalities who impressed us last year to be a part of the team.

Christmas in Oaxaca for Families
Christmas in Oaxaca for Families

This Christmas holiday trip in Oaxaca offers more color and more hands-on fun than anywhere else in the Americas. The trip begins in charming Oaxaca City in the heart of the high valley, continues with a breathtaking flight across the Sierra Madre del Sur to the coast, and concludes in Huatulco, known for its dramatically beautiful shoreline and secluded bays. The over-the-top pageantry of December 23 features parades of giant papier-mache heads, and competitions between artists who create sculptures from 7-pound radishes. This day alone would make the trip worthwhile, but you'll enjoy one delight after another from the moment of arrival. Sample Oaxaca's exotic fruit popsicles in flavors ranging from lime to tamarind to jamaica (ha-MY-ca). Learn from weavers and woodcarvers and try your own hand at painting those whimsical wooden animals that Mexicans call alebrijas (ah-lay-BREE-has). Learn from a Mexican grandma how to cook tortillas, tamales and Mexican hot chocolate. Explore Monte Alban, the first urban center of ancient Mesoamerica. Visit a coffee farm. Swim, snorkel and star gaze.

Great Primate Tracking Expedition
Great Primate Tracking Expedition

This is quite simply the most comprehensive mountain gorilla tracking expedition. Our focus is very specific: track and spend as much time as possible with the great apes of Rwanda and Uganda in their natural habitat. We will be visiting three separate gorilla habitats where, with a bit of effort, we have a very high likelihood of finding families of this largest primate. We can also expect to find chimpanzees and numerous species of other primates, as well as many species of birds, mammals and reptiles. Visitation with the Mountain Gorillas is strictly limited to one small group of humans per family per day. Demand for these permits far exceeds availability so advance reservations are imperative. We will be staying in the best available lodges and camps. While primates are the theme and object of our quest, we will also be visiting superb natural ecosystems with a spectacular complement of rare and beautiful birds, mammals and reptiles. We will be alert to all aspects of our environment, including villages and communities along the way. We will be accompanied by exceptional local guides. This will be a great trip to learn about Rwanda and Uganda’s distinctive wildlife and people. The founding Director, Will Weber, who has been traveling to Africa since 1980 will accompany the trip.
