"GOING BACK IN TIME"
Our family moved here when my husband retired last November (2010). We were looking for a country life with all the conveniences of the city. Well, it pretty much lived up to our expectations. Some parts of down town are very run down and there are areas where you would say, this must have been nice at one time. Overall, the countryside is beautiful. The schools are top notch and our children really seem to enjoy living here. One thing we've noticed is that there are several families in the area that are very dysfunctional. We do not know if there is substance abuse involved but one would believe so. It's sort of the type of place where there isn't that much to do so people look for outside sources. And even though the schools are top notch, many people seem uneducated and a little simple. Coming from NYC, it is a major culture shock for us. We enjoy being away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but sometimes need a little more action than what Bangor has to offer. It's a good place to live if you are retired. However, if you are looking for a good job, this is not the place to be. Most jobs are menial and offer only minimum wage, unless of course you are a professional (i.e. doctor, lawyer, etc.). One thing that really impressed us is that prices are much lower on housing, food, essentials, etc.. This makes being retired much easier because you are on a fixed income. If you are looking for action, this is not the place to be. If you're happy going to a state fair for enjoyment, you would like it here.
