General Information about Idlewild

Idlewild is a vacation and retirement community in Yates Township located in a small rural northwestern part of the U.S. state of Michigan near the southeastern border of Lake County. It was one of only a few resorts in the country where African-Americans were allowed to vacation and purchase property before this discrimination became illegal in 1964.
Idlewild surrounds the lake it was named for. The headwaters of the Pere Marquette River run through here, with a couple of public access points adjacent to Broadway Road, where it crosses. About half of the township is contained in the Manistee National Forest.

"Great Place to Have An African American Family Heritage"

The pros for Idlewild, MI for my family from 1940's - 1990's was my grandparents built a beautiful family cottage, where we had abundance in life's enjoyments, love from family. Allot of friendly, giving families live there all year around. Great family enjoyment in the spring to Fall months

The Cons, my grandparents passed away in 1970's, and no one cared enough to try to keep the house up, and the weather in the winter is harsh and cold. Not enough rental properties. All the history we have that there are possibly some that want to come in to Idlewild, MI during times at it lowest, or weakest moments, and try to take the great history away by words or deeds. That to me is sad. Although it will never stop us from being who we are as a people since 1912 when it all begin.
