General Information about Little Compton

Little Compton is a town in Newport County, Rhode Island, United States. Its population was 3,593 at the time of the 2000 census.[1] Little Compton is located in southeastern Rhode Island, between the Sakonnet River and the Massachusetts state border. It is the birthplace of the Rhode Island Red hen.
According to 17th century land evidence, Little Compton originally belonged to the Sakonnet (variations include Sogkonate, Seconit, Seaconnet, etc.)tribe, who were led by Awashonks, the cousin of Metacomet (commonly known as King Philip). The area was known by the same name, which means "the black goose comes".
