"Great Amenities"
Harrison has a lot going for it, but there are some disadvantages as well. Everyone says it's such a cute town and they love to come to Harrison in the summer. That is a fair statement. In the summer Harrison is host to lots of tourists who come by bicycle, car and boat. This little resort city is located right on the water at the south end of Lake Coeur d'Alene. There is a 72 mile paved bicycle trail, Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, that passes right through town making it a destination stop or brief stop-over for 100s of bicycle enthusiats. The city also has a swim beach and the county has a boat launch and docks available for the enjoyment of residents and tourists. In the winter there is hardly anything open except a convenience store and gas station that provides service from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday through Friday, a grocery store that is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, a library with limited hours during the week and the post office. It is an 18 mile drive to St. Maries for other basic necessities or a 40 mile drive to Coeur d'Alene. The local government consists of a Mayor, 6-member City Council, City Clerk and City Treasurer. There is an unusual amount of discord always going on in the city, in my opinion, for such a small town. The City Council and Mayor do not enforce city code uniformly and they are as secretive as possible about what is going on in the city usually without breaking any state laws concerning public hearings and open meetings. They has a City Attorney that attends the City Council meetings and weighs in on topics as if she were the 7th council member or a City Manager yet residents of Harrison are not permitted to ask questions during the meeting or have any input. It's a great place to visit and a fine place to live if you don't need to ask City Hall for any type of information or permits and you are not interested in changing anything.
