"Best place to be in the summer!"

Capitan was growing in the early 2000's but 2008 began a steady decline in population. People like to retire here but they soon find that medical care is unacceptably inadequate. Plus, at 6500 feet elevation, a significant number of retirees find their breathing severely affected and end up moving to a lower altit ude, such as Albuquerque, Las Cruces, or Roswell. I can promise you that those lower cities do not offer much in the same kind of mountain ambiance that Capitan has. Ruidoso is the closest town and it is a tourist town, filled with boom and bust related to the oil industry in west Texas. The weather can't be beat and that is the primary reason to be here. The scenery is spectacular. There are not many disasters weatherwise to contend with. Forest fires are to be aware of, but actually affect a limited number of people. The wind blows a lot in the springtime, so that is when we leave to visit more calm places. Winters are for the most part, mild. July and August are the months to come visit as the dry cool air is just awesome.
