General Information about Lewisport

Lewisport is a city in Hancock County, Kentucky, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 1,639 at the 2000 census. It is included in the Owensboro, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lewisport's mayor is Chad Gregory, and the constable is Danny Case. John Garner is the city police chief. The city has three main churches, as well as many smaller ones, most of which are Southern Baptist in nature. They are Lewisport Baptist Church, St. Columbia Catholic Church, and Lewisport United Methodist Church. There is one grocery store called Crossroads IGA. There's a video store named Hancock video. There are two gas stations. Jumpin Jack's, and Tim's. Lewisport is one of two cities that compose Hancock County. Lewisport is home to three of four public schools in Hancock County. They are North Hancock Elementary School, Hancock County Middle School, and Hancock County High School. Lewisport Elementary along with Hawesville Elementary were shut down after the 2004 - 2005 school year. Lewisport has two restaurants in Subway, and JJ's Pizza. Lewisport is always home to the cities famous Heritage Festival which takes place towards the end of May each year. Lewisport is the hometown of 1999 Mr. Kentucky Football Travis Atwell. Atwell holds most of the football records at Hancock County High School. It is also home to famous runner Jeremy Wardrip who won cross country regionals in 2005, and was three time state runner up in the class A 2 mile from 2004 to 2006. Wardrip led the hancock county cross country boys team to four straight regional cross country championships from 2002 to 2006, and to two straight state runner up Class A team titles in 2003 and 2004. Lewisport is also the home of Lenny Holloway, who was a member of Hancock County's two state runner up cross country teams, won the 2006 class A indoor state championship for the 800 meter run, and was a member of Hancock County's 3200 meter relay class A state championship team. Lewisport is also home to many local bands such as Mono Kid, 14th N Hathaway, Avoid This Panic, and Hip Hop Group 39 Dimez. Lewisport resident former Hancock County High School Football and Basketball superstar Michael Schwindel plays Football for the University of Kentucky.
