General Information about Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island or Hilton Head is a town (located on an island of the same name) in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. It is 20 miles (32km) north of Savannah, Georgia, and 95 miles (153km) south of Charleston, South Carolina. The island features 12 miles (19km) of beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean and is a popular vacation destination. In 2004, an estimated 2.25 million visitors pumped more than $1.5 billion into the local economy.[3] The year-round population was 33,862 at the 2000 census, although during the peak of summer vacation season the population can swell to 275,000.[4] Over the past decade, the island's population growth rate was 32%.[5]
The island has a rich history that started with seasonal occupation by native Americans thousands of years ago, and continued with European exploration and the Sea Island Cotton trade. It became an important base of operations for the Union blockade of the Southern ports during the Civil War. Once the island fell to Union troops, hundreds of ex-slaves flocked to Hilton Head, which is still home to many 'native islanders', many of whom are descendants of freed slaves known as the Gullah (or Geechee) who have managed to hold onto much of their ethnic and cultural identity.[6]

"hilton head from one who has known it a long time"

I first visited back in 1973, My parents retired there shortly after, I met my wife there in 1978, and we have had a home there since 2004 with a retirement move coming in June 2013. The things to like are pretty obvious and most have to do with the natural setting. The beaches are excellent, of course, but so are the marsh views, the live oaks, the moss, and the overall tranquility of the environment. At its best it is a place where you can enjoy the outdoors and still be around a relatively sophisticated collection of restaurants, shops, and arts activity. All of these things are best enjoyed from September through May I might add. Another plus is the proximity to Savannah, Beaufort and Charleston, all of which are great day trips.

It is not paradise, however. The numerous gated communities and the lack of any real town or village center tend to create a very different feel from a true town built around more organic development. Summers are hot and humid. And while the strong environmental ethic and large number of transplants tend to temper political extremism this is still South Carolina. Someone accustomed to Cape Cod or Northern California may well be dismayed by some of the local dialogue!

In the end, it is a good place for those with a particular affinity for the sea island landscape and pace. And while I, for one, wish it had developed along somewhat different lines, the natural beauty is still quite a draw.
