"Where else instead of Florida?"

I hear that Asheville, NC might fit the bill for you. I believe it was rated one of the most retiree friendly places by some magazine.

Consider Savannah Ga.,, historic, senior friendly, medical community, seafood, beach, golf, great nite life, culture, college town..
have you tried the website "findyourspot.com?" You plug in various things you are looking for, and it will suggest areas for you. Like you, we are in NJ, and want to retire in a place with a longer summer. We are considering outside of Asheville, NC or No. Georgia. The further south you go from say Virginia, the more likely you are to experience those huge roach critters, that everyone politely calls Palmetto Bugs. . . . yuck! They are what's keeping me out of Florida or anywhere by the coast!

I've heard that the housing market in Florida is particularly awful right now. I'd really like to move to a warm weather place where I am not cross country from my home in New Jersey. Does any one have any suggestions of places that are warm, friendly to retirees and still relatively close to NJ? In particular, I'm looking to move to a retirement community where there is an active community (and lots of golf!) Thanks
