i am a member of a garden club that wants to make our comunity garden wheelchair accesible. i’m looking for information about how wide the paths need to be to accommodate wheelchairs and any other advice you can give us. thanks!
Your paths need to be a minimum of 3 feet wide. I also recommend you install handrails and the ramps. You can get more information at www.access-board.gov/. This is an independent federal agency whose primary mission is accessibility for people with disabilities. They list all types of standards and guidelines to help make life easier for the disabled.
You should also consider people who are disabled but not in a wheelchair - have grab bars and/or hand rails installed in any area with steps, since ramps can be even more dangerous on crutches, or with a cane or walker.
