Is there any way to know how much of my contribution actually goes to the charity? I don't have a lot to give, but I want to make sure that my donation goes to the people who need it, not marketing and PR firms.

The site I use is charitynavigator.org. It's easy to understand. I also have checked out the charity section of the Better Business Bureau site. It is bbb.org/charity. It has more info, but is also more complicated. But they do let you register a complaint.

You can go to web sites like www.foundation.org or www.freeerisa.com and look at thier free 990 tax forms. Usually you can tell a lot about how legitimate the organization is by looking at tax forms. All forms are free public record
