Is there any way to know how much of my contribution actually goes to the charity? I don't have a lot to give, but I want to make sure that my donation goes to the people who need it, not marketing and PR firms.

You can go to web sites like or and look at thier free 990 tax forms. Usually you can tell a lot about how legitimate the organization is by looking at tax forms. All forms are free public record
