"Sports & rec ideas for shy son"
Replies
Your son will benefit from enrolling in a martial arts class. he’ll gain confidnce, improve his physical fitness..plus it’s a great way to meet friends in a non-competitive environment.
Try individual sports such as swimming, running, skiing, etc. There are many community programs and school programs available. I have found that the kids that gravitate toward individual sports seem like your description of your son.Good Luck.
My kids were a lot like that too when they were younger. My oldest son did have one good friend and I put him in sports so he could be on the same team as his friend. Maybe your son has a friend like this? It will allow him to be comfortable around one person and will expand to others as time goes by...

My 12 year old son is a bit shy and is not a fan of organized sports. I’m looking for sports/recreation ideas to boost his self-esteem.
